The French minister of defence, Jean Yves Le-Drian told the European Parliament at a meeting of the Defence Subcommittee in Strasbourg, on the 20th of May 2013, that France is opposed to the idea of including the defence sector in the upcoming trade negotiations with the US. This is because it would set a precedent, insofar as the defence sector has never been included in trade negotiations with third countries.

EU acquis in the field of free movement of defence equipment inside the internal market consists of a legislative package from 2009, the “defence package”.
